Welcome to ThisVeganWhimsy!  My name is Hannah Siegmund, and I live in the lovely St. Petersburg, Florida.

What is vegan?  What does it mean to identify as vegan?  What is plant-based?  How do you get enough protein?  Haven’t humans always eaten meat?  Is it really wrong to eat an animal if it was raised humanely?  What about eggs?  Is it even possible to give up cheese!? What about holidays?  Do you have to eat salad every day?  What about eating out?  Who cares, anyway?

These are just a few of the questions I asked when I decided to become vegan.  These are a few of the questions everyone asks when they decide to become vegan.  Or if they meet a vegan, or hear about a vegan, or even think about vegans.  They all have answers, of course, but the most important question of all is, What about the food?  Becoming vegan opened up a whole new culinary world for me.  Cooking up meals that are both delicious and healthy has become a passion.  Here you’ll find vegan and whole foods plant-based recipes that will satisfy even the pickiest eater and take your cooking adventures to new heights.

My Story

I grew up eating the Standard America Diet.  Meat, dairy products, and processed foods were a large part of my life, especially after I started high school.  In college, I began to exist on fast food, pre-packaged convenience items, and very few veggies.  Eventually my body rebelled and I began to experience debilitating migraines and near constant stomach trouble.  After a year of tests and doctor’s appointments, I was diagnosed with a dairy allergy and told that my headaches would likely be with me for the rest of my life.

I began to research dairy-free recipes and stumbled across the documentary Earthlings (warning: Earthlings shows highly graphic and unedited violence against animals and some strong language is used.  The images and subject matter are disturbing and not suitable for children.).  I couldn’t make it through the entire film in one sitting, and what I learned was the catalyst towards a vegan lifestyle.  As I began to eat foods free of animal products, I found Forks Over Knives (available on Netflix) and learned about the importance of eating whole plant foods.  The more whole plant foods I ate, the better I felt!

My migraines have diminished from two or three every week to one every few months.  My digestive troubles are almost completely gone, and I feel wonderful!  I have more energy, I need less sleep, and the food is fantastic.  Join me on my journey to continued health!!
